NEW DELHI: Bangladesh Parliament has congratulated the Indian government for the recently passed women’s reservation legislation during a meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday.
Participating as a special guest in the G20 event of parliament speakers, Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury called the passing of the bill a historic event and said that it was significant for both countries, according to sources.
Birla also spoke at the event, where he highlighted India’s role in the world through the movement to save the environment. He called Mission Life, a global eco-friendly initiative initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a significant step in this regard.
On the same day, Birla held a separate meeting with representatives of Pan African countries, including Bangladesh, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. He discussed India-Bangladesh friendly relations, socio-economic, economic and political situation, P20 issue, G20 summit, parliamentary alliance group, climate problem etc. with Chowdhury.
Chowdhury said that Bangladesh, being a delta located in the Bay of Bengal, is the most affected by the adverse effects of climate change. She said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken all necessary steps to counter this adverse effect and that parliamentarians of both countries can work together to deal with the issue.
Birla assured Chowdhury that Bangladesh-India friendly relations will be stronger in the future and expressed hope that India will stand by Bangladesh in the development of relations between the two countries and in mutual cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi officially inaugurated the P-20 summit on Friday, October 13.
