NEW DELHI: In an exclusive interview with The New Indianโ€™s Executive Editor, Rohan Dua, Baijayant Panda, a 5-time Member of Parliament and the Delhi BJP Election In-charge, discussed the relevance of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and its potential implementation in Delhi.

When asked about the BJPโ€™s core themes of UCC and One Nation One Election, Panda highlighted the importance of UCC in modern democracies.

โ€œThe Uniform Civil Code is a requirement of any modern democracy, where every citizen is equal,โ€ Panda said.

โ€œIt is also embedded in our constitution. Dr. Ambedkar, who shaped our constitution, strongly advocated for equality among citizens. This is not just a political issue; it is a matter of principle.โ€ Panda highlighted

Panda emphasized that the UCC is a fundamental pillar to ensure equal rights for all citizens, adding, โ€œBecause of the tragedy of partition, some parts of the agenda were left unfinished. But there was always a clear direction to implement them, and UCC was part of that.โ€

The BJP leader explained that vote bank politics often prevents the implementation of such laws.

โ€œUCC doesnโ€™t suit the interests of vote bank politics because they pander to different groups,โ€ Panda said. โ€œBut sooner or later, it has to happen.โ€

Panda pointed out that under Prime Minister Modiโ€™s leadership, the BJP government has been fulfilling many of these long-standing objectives, such as the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

โ€œNow UCC has reached a stage where it is being taken up state by state,โ€ he said.

He also referred to the recent implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand.

โ€œUttarakhand has finally implemented UCC after a process that took two to three years,โ€ he stated.

As discussions around UCC gain momentum, Pandaโ€™s comments reinforce the BJPโ€™s stance that the code is a necessary step toward ensuring equality and justice in India.
