NEW DELHI: Indian para shooter Avani Lekhara recently shared her inspiring journey on the House of Glory podcast, an initiative by the Gagan Narang Sports Promotion Foundation. The two-time Olympic Gold medalist opened up about her transformation into a para-athlete, her resilience in overcoming challenges, and the crucial role of mental health in her success.

At just 10 years old, Avani’s life took a dramatic turn when she was paralyzed from the waist down following a car accident. Despite the life-altering setback, she found the strength to persevere, picking up shooting in 2015. Since then, Avani has become a trailblazer in para-shooting, claiming numerous national and international titles. Her crowning achievement came in 2020 when she became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic Gold medal in Tokyo.

Reflecting on her accident, Avani shared her gratitude for the challenges that shaped her into the person she is today. “It has been a roller coaster journey,” she said. “Before the accident, I was into dancing, singing, and other hobbies. Restarting life in a wheelchair was tough. You have to relearn even the basic acts like sitting.”

Avani also discussed the importance of mental strength in shooting, emphasizing that it is just as vital as physical training. “Shooting is 70-80% mental,” she explained. “All top athletes in the final are in a similar situation, but it’s the one who can focus and concentrate the most that wins.”

Her outlook on failures has also played a key role in her career development. “Every time I faced a setback, I asked myself, ‘What can I learn from this?’ I believe lows are as important as highs, and they teach you far more,” Avani concluded.

Avani Lekhara’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and mental fortitude in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
