SHIMLA: The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) in Manali has issued an avalanche alert for 24 places in Himachal Pradesh, including Kullu-Manali, Lahaul and Spiti districts.

The maximum threat of avalanche is in nine places in Udaipur (Lahaul and Spiti) and Kilar (Chamba). The Kullu administration has also asked people to stay away from certain locations, including, Rohtang Pass and Jalori Jot Pass and Khanag.

Following the alert, the Kullu district administration issued related directions. It has asked tourists as well as locals to avoid venturing out in avalanche-prone or heavy snow-bound areas for the next few days. Besides, disaster management authorities have also been asked to stay on standby to deal with any kind of eventuality.

Kullu Deputy Commissioner Ashutosh Garg has advised people to plan their movement after taking into consideration the weather situation.

An avalanche was triggered near Rashel village in tribal Lahaul and Spiti district on Monday. A purported video of the avalanche enveloping an about 1-km area in snow has gone viral on social media. However, no loss of life and property was reported in the incident.

The snow is learnt to have skidded off Wamtat mountain, triggering an about 10-minute avalanche activity near Rashel-Linger village, which was captured on camera by locals.

Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner Neeraj Kumar has appealed the area people to avoid unnecessarily moving out of their houses till the situation normalised.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has, meanwhile, engaged its workforce and machinery on the Manali-Leh highway to restore it for traffic movement between Manali and Keylong.
