New Delhi: Delhi Education Minister Atishi has taken a stern stance against the Education Secretary and Directorate of Education, issuing a show-cause notice for their alleged defiance of her directive to halt the transfer of 5,000 teachers. The Minister’s order, issued on July 1, explicitly stated that teachers should not be transferred solely based on their tenure of over ten years in a particular school.
The roots of the controversy can be traced back to a circular issued by the DoE on June 11, which introduced a new transfer policy for teaching staff. The circular’s Clause 16 sparked outrage, as it compelled teachers with over a decade of service in the same school to apply for transfer or face forced relocation. Atishi vehemently opposed this order on June 28, setting the stage for the current showdown.

The political tensions escalated on Wednesday, as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) held a press conference to lambast the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its alleged attempts to sabotage Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s groundbreaking education reforms in the capital.

AAP leader and MLA Dilip Pandey accused the BJP-led Central government and the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of conspiring to destabilize Delhi’s education system by forcibly transferring over 5,000 teachers from Delhi government schools. Pandey alleged that the BJP’s hubris has turned Delhi’s teachers into political pawns, sacrificing their careers on the altar of the party’s power play.
