In the Bihar assembly by-elections, both BJP and RJD have managed to save their seats. The RJD has once again captured the Mokama seat, while BJP retained its fort in Gopalganj. Both the seats were earlier with these two parties and the direct contest was also between these two parties. Finally, in Mokama seat, RJD candidate Neelam Devi won while on the other hand BJP candidate Kusum Devi defeated RJD candidate in Gopalganj.
The by-elections of Mokama and Gopalganj have been very special in many ways. Earlier, there used to be male MLAs in both these seats, but now women MLAs have won from both these seats. The husbands of both the female winning candidate had earlier reached the assembly after winning from the same seats.
After the death of former minister and BJP MLA Subhash Singh, elections were held in Gopalganj. Here his wife Kusum Devi has won. Elections in Mokama were held after former MLA Anant Singh lost his membership. Now his wife Neelam Devi has won the election.
BJP was up against a combined opposition in Bihar.
BJP candidate Aman Giri won the Gola Gokarannath assembly bypolls on Sunday by defeating his nearest rival and Samajwadi Party candidate by over 34,000 votes.
BJP also won the by-polls in Odisha’s Dhamnagar constituency. BJP MLA Bishnu Charan Sethi’s death had necessitated the by-election. The saffron party fielded Sethi’s son Suryabanshi Suraj as its candidate. 80,090 votes were polled in favour of him against BJD’s Abanti Das, the only woman among the total of five candidates in Dhamnagar. She secured 70,288 votes in the contest.
