NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the upgraded Lachit Borphukan Training Academy in Dergaon, Assam, on Thursday, marking a major leap in modernizing police education in the Northeast. The state-of-the-art 340-acre institution, built at a cost of ₹1,024 crore in two phases, aims to be a leading center for law enforcement training with cutting-edge technology.
At the event, Shah hailed 17th-century Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan as a “national icon” who defended Assam against Mughal forces. He emphasized that Borphukan’s legacy, once overlooked, is now part of school textbooks in 23 languages. “Once a forgotten hero, today his courage inspires the country,” he said.

The academy’s first phase, developed at ₹167.4 crore, includes a five-story training complex with smart classrooms, advanced weapon simulators, research centers, a museum, and a modern parade ground. Shah announced that once all three phases are completed, with a total budget of ₹1,050 crore, the academy will rank among India’s top police training institutions.
Highlighting Assam’s transformation under the BJP-led government, Shah contrasted today’s “era of stability” with the past “decades of turmoil and neglect” under Congress rule. He noted that over 10,000 former insurgents have surrendered and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies for fostering peace. “Assam, once known for conflict, will soon house India’s first semiconductor facility,” he stated.
The Home Minister also highlighted large-scale infrastructure investments, including ₹3 lakh crore for development and ₹5,000 crore in recent investments under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership. “Assam is on the path to becoming a major employment hub,” Shah asserted.
Targeting the Congress, he questioned its inability to resolve conflicts and drive progress in the past. He also commended Assam Police for shifting its focus from counterinsurgency to community service, attributing the change to public support for the BJP’s leadership.
Shah’s visit to Assam was part of his three-day tour of the Northeast, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to regional security and economic growth.
