NEW DELHI: Assam is now emerging as a promising industrial hub. Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently announced that a semiconductor industry worth ₹27,000 crore is set to be established in the state, marking a significant leap towards economic transformation.

Assam to get ₹27,000 crore semiconductor plant as part of ₹8 lakh crore investment plan

This announcement was made during the inauguration of the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam. Shah lauded Assam’s remarkable journey from conflict to development under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi.

Assam has long been known for its turbulent past, plagued by insurgent movements and violent clashes.

However, under the Modi government’s initiatives, peace agreements such as the Assam-Bodoland Agreement (2020), the Karbi Anglong Agreement (2021), the Tribal Peace Agreement (2022), and the ULFA and Assam-Arunachal Agreement (2023) have brought significant stability to the region.

Over 10,000 former insurgents have surrendered their arms and joined the mainstream, creating a conducive environment for economic growth.

The ₹27,000 Crore Semiconductor Project

The upcoming semiconductor industry is poised to drive Assam’s economic revival. This investment aligns with India’s broader goal to become a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, ensuring reduced dependency on imports and strengthening the nation’s self-reliance in electronics production.

The project will open employment opportunities for thousands of skilled and semi-skilled workers in the region.

It is part of the Modi government’s larger vision for infrastructural expansion in Assam, which also includes projects like the over 200 km long Bharatmala project (₹10,000 crore), Dhubri-Phulbari bridge (₹3,000 crore), and expansion of airports and medical colleges.

Assam’s Infrastructure Boom

To complement the industrial growth, Assam is witnessing significant advancements in infrastructure. The Lachit Barphukan Police Academy itself is a symbol of the state’s progress, with ₹1,050 crore allocated across three phases to develop ultra modern training facilities for the best police academy in the entire country.

Furthermore, infrastructure investments amounting to ₹8 lakh crore are expected to transform Assam into a commercial and connectivity hub in Northeast India.

With peace prevailing, Assam’s police force, once engaged primarily in counter-insurgency operations, is now focused on protecting citizen rights and enforcing new criminal laws.

As Assam steps into a new era of industrialization and economic prosperity, the upcoming semiconductor industry serves as a beacon of hope, promising employment, technological advancement, and sustained peace in the region.
