NEW DELHI: A heated protest erupted in the Jharubari area of Palashbari on Wednesday as residents voiced their anger over alleged irregularities in a road construction project. The locals accused the contractor, reportedly the brother of BJP MLA Hemanga Thakuria, of using substandard materials and ignoring community concerns.

The protest highlighted growing dissatisfaction with infrastructure development in the region. Kamrup Rural Police quickly intervened to prevent further escalation. Authorities have assured residents that their grievances will be addressed and promised a thorough investigation into the allegations.

A local resident expressed frustration, saying, “The road construction has been ongoing for some time, but the quality is poor. When it rains, water floods the area, making the road unusable. Despite our complaints, the contractors dismissed our concerns and even threatened to halt the work altogether.”

This is not an isolated incident. Similar allegations of corruption and substandard work have plagued other road projects in the Kamrup (R) district, including one in the Kumarbari area. These recurring issues have raised questions about the Public Works Department’s (PWD) oversight and accountability.

The MLA and other public representatives face mounting pressure to ensure transparency and quality in infrastructure projects. Investigations are underway to determine the extent of the irregularities and hold those responsible accountable.

Residents continue to demand immediate action, urging authorities to prioritize quality and community input in future projects.
