GUWAHATI/NEW DELHI: The death toll due to floods in Assam has risen to 174, with 14 people losing their lives in the last 24 hours, state government has said.
More than 563 relief camps and 331 relief distribution centres have been set up in the state. Around 3 lakh people have taken shelter in these camps.
Teams of Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) from the ministry of home affairs (MHA) reached Assam and met Jishnu Barua, Assam chief secretary and senior officials of Indian Army, Indian Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) at Assam secretariat in Dispur earlier in the day.
The first team of IMCT assessed the damages caused due to floods in Cachar district and met the District Administration. Quick response was assured to restore the damages by the IMCT Team.
The second team visited regions of Nalbari district today. Water supply schemes, embankment breach points and P&RD bundh breach points of Paschim Nalbari and Banekuchi revenue circles were visited during the recce.
The team also visited the damaged houses in Sarupeta revenue circle in Bajali district for assessment of the damages caused by the flood.
The team also visited the flood-affected areas of Lama Bahadurpur and Nilambazar revenue circle in Karimganj district to assess damages caused by the flood.
“In view of the current flood situation in the State, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) along with all the stakeholders expedited the response and recovery services to the severely affected districts,” the government said.
A team of ICMT visited embankment breach areas in Mora Kalang, Padum Pukhuri, Dahuti Padum Pukhuri, and Domal in Marigaon district on Friday.
“In Kamrup district, the team visited the breach points in Kayan revenue circle for necessary damage assessment. It discussed the situation with the district administration and assured of quick response to restore the damages,”the the government has said.
Officials have said that flood water has started receding from the worst-hit areas.
While 155 people died due to floods, 18 lost their lives in resultant landslides since April 6.
As per the latest flood bulletin, 29 lakh people living in 2,450 villages across 30 districts are still affected due to the floods. 63,000 hectares of crop area continues to remain inundated in the state.
