Indian Army Major and his wife have been arrested in Assam for brutally assaulting minor househelp

HAFLONG: In a shocking incident, an Indian Army Major and his wife have been arrested in Dima Hasao district of Assam. They have been accused of brutally torturing a minor girl who used to work as a house-help for them.

The Army personnel identified as Major Shailendra Yadav is currently posted in Himachal Pradesh’s Palampur. He was posted in Dima Hasao two years back when he married Kimmy Ralson of Haflong. Police said that they took the girl along with them in Palampur and allegedly tortured her there for several months.

Victim’s mother told the media that they didn’t recognise their daughter when she returned home. “She is 16 now but she looked like an old lady, her teeth were broken, burn marks on face, her ears chopped, she was not able to talk properly,” the mother said.

Speaking to The New Indian, the SP Mayank Kumar revealed the details of the case and the intervention of the police. “On morning of 24th September, we got info via social media, one minor girl from Haflong was taken to Himachal Pradesh and was brutally tortured. We found pout that the husband is Army Major. Further, we registered a case in Haflong Police Station,” said the SP.

The police have also revealed shocking details of the case. As per police, the couple used to beat the domestic help and broke her nose and damaged her ear. Further burn marks have been found and as per allegations she was stipped naked and her video was recorded. The victim was threatened that her video will be leaked if she complained.

The next course for the police is the rehabilitation of the victim. “All necessary assistance have been provided to the victim. We are emphasising on rehabilitation of the victim. We are taking care of psychological impact,” added the SP Mayank Kumar.

Dima Hasao Police registered a case (Haflong PS Case No.74/2023) under section 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 374 (Unlawful compulsory labor), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 370 (Buying or disposing of any person as a slave), and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Additionally, cases were registered against them under section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and section 3 of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
