NEW DELHI: The Indian Army hosted the Army Sports Conclave 2024 on December 30 at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt, reaffirming its pivotal role in shaping India’s sporting future. The event brought together over 200 distinguished participants, including athletes, sports federation officials, and representatives from across the country. The conclave focused on strengthening collaboration with key organizations like the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI), with a vision to elevate India’s global sporting stature and prepare for a potential bid to host the 2036 Olympics.

 

Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Hon’ble Minister of Labour and Employment & Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, attended as the Chief Guest. Joining him were Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (Retd), Hon’ble Minister of Industry & Commerce and Minister of Youth Affairs for Rajasthan, and General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff. General Dwivedi highlighted the Army’s role in fostering a culture of excellence and discipline in sports, underscoring its commitment to producing world-class athletes.

The Indian Army’s Mission Olympics Wing reported significant achievements in 2024, solidifying its reputation as a cornerstone of India’s sports ecosystem. Athletes under its guidance excelled across various disciplines, winning medals at national and international levels. Their successes in archery, athletics, boxing, diving, wrestling, and weightlifting have positioned the Army as a critical contributor to India’s sports infrastructure.

 

At the Paris Olympics and Paralympics 2024, Army athletes delivered stellar performances. Subedar Neeraj Chopra secured a Silver medal in Javelin Throw with a throw of 89.45 meters, while Subedar Avinash Sable clinched Silver in the 3000m Steeplechase. In the Paralympics, Naib Subedar Hokato Sema earned a Bronze in the Seated Shot Put (F-57), and Mrs. Simran, wife of Naik Gajender Singh, won Bronze in the T-12 200m event. These achievements underscored the Army’s dedication to supporting athletes on the global stage.

Looking ahead to the 2036 Olympics, the Indian Army has outlined a strategic vision to prepare athletes for international success. This includes a focus on physical and mental resilience, integration of sports science, and mentorship from elite coaches. Efforts are also underway to empower women in sports through initiatives like the Army Girls Sports Company and to enhance parasports by upgrading the Army Paralympic Node in Pune into a Centre of Excellence.

 

The conclave provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities in India’s sports ecosystem. The Army, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, IOA, and national sports federations, aims to align its training programs with international standards. This collaborative approach reflects the Army’s commitment to ensuring that Indian athletes are equipped to compete and excel on the world stage.

 

As India aspires to host the 2036 Olympics, the Indian Army’s unwavering dedication to sports remains a driving force behind the nation’s ambitions. With a clear roadmap and relentless pursuit of excellence, the Army continues to inspire a new era of sporting achievements for India.
