The Indian Army has ordered a court of inquiry into the murder of a 29-year-old rifleman who was pushed off a train by a ticket examiner at Bareilly railway station in Uttar Pradesh earlier this month.
Sonu Kumar Singh, a resident of Balia district, lost his both legs and succumbed to injuries earlier this week.
He was allegedly pushed off the Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express by TTE Kuppam Boro when he was trying to board the train for Delhi, where he was posted. Singh reportedly died of septicaemia.
As per local media reports, Singh had taken leave for the ‘namkaran’ ritual of his son who was born in October.
An FIR was registered with the Government Railway Police (GRP), Bareilly on November 17, the day the fateful incident happened. TTE Boro was charged under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Later, he was charged with murder.
Officials in New Delhi said the court of inquiry is being undertaken by the 346 Field Artillery Regiment based in Bareilly.
The statement of eyewitness Deshraj has been recorded by the GRP, Provost Unit and the in charge of the court of inquiry. “Local police and the Bareilly district administration are being consulted regularly,” the officials said.
Accused Boro was not arrested till November 24, they said, adding that four parties of the GRP Bareilly unit have been sent to Delhi and Guwahati.
“The issue is being perused on high priority with the ministry of defence, local police and the railway authorities. It has been raised to the highest levels with authorities concerned,” the officials stated.
Officials of the regimental centre have contacted the victim’s family for necessary support.
The Army officials also issued an appeal to the general people to “avoid unnecessary discussion on social media”.
