NEW DELHI: Havildar Naresh Kumar, a serving Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) of the 10th Battalion of the MAHAR Regiment (an infantry regiment of the Indian Army), turned personal tragedy into a beacon of hope for others. On February 8, 2025, the life of 18-year-old  Arshdeep Singh, the beloved son of Havildar Naresh Kumar, was tragically cut short in a road accident.

 

Despite the overwhelming grief of losing his son, Havildar Kumar made a decision that would go on to save the lives of six critically ill patients. In the midst of his sorrow, he chose to donate Arshdeep’s organs, offering a second chance at life to those in desperate need.

On February 16, 2025, Havildar Kumar gave his consent for the donation of his son’s liver, kidneys, pancreas, and corneas. This selfless act not only honored his son’s legacy but also highlighted the power of love, generosity, and the human spirit. The organs were swiftly transported through a green corridor, ensuring timely transplantation.

 

The liver and kidney were sent to the Army Hospital Research and Referral in New Delhi, while the kidney and pancreas were sent to a patient suffering from life-threatening Type 1 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease at PGI. The corneas, meanwhile, were preserved to restore sight to those in need.

This life-saving effort was made possible thanks to the skill and coordination of the team at Command Hospital, Chandimandir, renowned for its excellence in organ retrieval. Their expertise ensured that Arshdeep’s organs would give new hope to those battling severe medical conditions.

 

Havildar Naresh Kumar’s decision is more than just an act of sacrifice; it is a shining example of resilience and empathy in the face of unspeakable loss. His selflessness serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one can have even in their darkest hour.
