NEW DELHI: Renowned filmmaker Anil Sharma, famous for Gadar and Gadar 2, delves into an emotional theme in his upcoming film Vanvaas. In a conversation with The New Indian Executive Editor Rohan Dua, Sharma discussed how the film addresses the growing disconnect between children and their parents in modern India.
Sharma explained, “I came across stories of children abandoning their parents, even telling them they were dead. These stories deeply moved me.” He explained that Vanvaas is his way of reminding people to cherish their parents. “In today’s world, the dust of time settles on relationships. This film is meant to blow that dust away and remind people to value their parents, no matter how busy they are.”

The director shared how his son, Utkarsh Sharma, has transitioned into a more mature role in Vanvaas, moving away from his earlier “chocolate boy” image. “Utkarsh is a brilliant actor. His character in Vanvaas shows his growth, and he’s now ready for more complex roles,” Sharma said with pride.
Sharma also spoke about his daughter, Kairvina Sharma, who is pursuing a career in Western music. “Kairvina has always been passionate about English music. She’s doing it on her own, and I’m proud of her independence and hard work,” he shared.
Reflecting on his personal life, Sharma spoke emotionally about his late parents. “When Gadar was successful, I wished my father could see it. Now, I understand how precious every moment with our parents is,” he said. “That’s why Vanvaas is so personal to me it’s a reminder to never forget our parents.”

When asked why he shifted from action films to a family-oriented drama, Sharma responded, “After the success of Gadar 2, everyone expected me to make another action film, but Vanvaas was necessary. A director’s job is to make films that speak to people’s hearts. This film brings families closer and reminds children not to abandon their parents.”
With Vanvaas, Sharma aims for more than box office success he wants to create a movement, encouraging children to appreciate and cherish their parents. “I hope this film makes a difference,” he concluded.
