NEW DELHI: Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have announced their mutual divorce after 29 years of marriage. The news broke on November 19th, when Saira released a press note through her lawyer, followed by Rahman’s official confirmation the next morning. The announcement quickly sparked widespread speculation over social media about the reasons behind their separation. The timing coincided with Rahman’s bassist, Mohini, also announcing her separation, leading to numerous unfounded rumours of a possible link between the two.
In response to these rumours, Rahman issued a legal notice warning against slander and speculation about his family. He emphasized that such actions were hurtful and demanded that media outlets and online portals cease spreading baseless stories.
Saira Banu addressed the situation further with an audio statement released on Sunday. She praised Rahman as the best man in the world and requested privacy for both of them during this challenging time. Emphasizing that their decision was mutual and personal, she urged the media and public to respect their need for space and avoid tarnishing Rahman’s name.

“I trust him with my life. That’s how much I love him, and that’s how he does. I request you all to stop speculating. God bless! And my sincere prayers that we are left alone and given space at this moment. We are not announcing anything officially yet. You need to stop tarnishing his name. This is absolutely rubbish,” Saira stated.
She also revealed that she is currently in Bombay for medical treatment, which contributed to her decision to take a break from Rahman. Saira appealed to YouTubers and the media not to speak ill of Rahman, reinforcing that their separation is a private matter.
The couple’s decision to part ways has undoubtedly been a difficult one, and they have both expressed a strong desire for privacy and respect as they navigate this period. With both Rahman and Saira addressing the issue publicly, it is hoped that further speculation will cease, allowing them to move forward in peace.
