NEW DELHI: Vivek Oberoi’s father and seasoned actor Suresh Oberoi, who is currently basking in the success of his recent superhit film, ‘Animal,’ revealed that he had no prior knowledge of his son’s relationship with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Suresh, who played Ranbir Kapoor’s grandfather in the movie, said during an interview that his son had never disclosed the status of his rumoured relationship with her. He had learnt about it from veteran director, Ram Gopal Verma.
He further illustrated that he had advised Vivek to not involve himself romantically with a co-worker. “I really liked the girl (Aishwarya) when she would come home. Abhi aapke bete ki friend aayegi to aap kya karoge, pyaar karoge na. Mujhe ye ho raha hai, vo raha hai, ye sab nahi malum tha. (If your son’s friend comes home, what will you do apart from loving her? I didn’t know much about what was happening, or who was doing what.)
For the unversed, prior to her involvement with Vivek, Aishwarya was involved with Salman Khan, which had led to a massive scandal between the two men. These developments culminated with Vivek accusing Salman of making threatening phone calls.
To date, Aishwarya has never publicly acknowledged her relationship with Vivek. They had reportedly parted ways in 2003, while Aishwarya married Abhishek in 2007.
On the flip side, Suresh emphasised that he wasn’t close friends with the Bachchans, but he asserted that the relationship among the Oberois, Khans, and Bachchans continued to be amicable. “Mere saath sab, aaj bhi Bachchan sahab milte hai, acha milte hai. Salman Khan milta hai, piche cigarette chupa ke, respect se baat (karta hai). (When Mr. Bachchan meets me, we get along well. When Salman Khan meets me, he hides a cigarette behind and talks with respect),” he said.
Earlier at a talk show hosted by Farah Khan, Vivek had swiped at Aishwarya for being ‘plastic’ when she did not support him for coming out against Salman.

However, Suresh highlighted that he still asks Vivek to touch Salman’s father, Salim Khan’s feet every time they meet each other. “Jab bhi Salim sahab milte hai, maine bola Vivek, ‘You have to touch his feet, badey hai.’ Salim bhai ki mai izzat karta hu. Abhi kuch na kuch hota hai to hota hai, but relation thodi bigad jate hai (I ask Vivek to touch Saleem’s feet whenever he meets him. I respect Salim sir. Things happen now and then, but relationships don’t get ruined),” he said.
These developments have come at a time when rumours have surfaced of Aishwarya divorcing her husband Abhishek Bachchan.
