NEW DELHI: With the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections just around the corner, The New Indian team has been on the ground in Amravati, gathering local voices and gauging voter sentiment in this high-stakes contest.

The New Indian team spoke with various locals, including Harishankar, a wholesale food seller who has resided in Amravati for over 20 years. A staunch BJP supporter, Harishankar voiced his dissatisfaction with Congress, stating, “I want the BJP to come to power in Maharashtra. Congress hasn’t delivered on its promises, and people here feel neglected.”

Harishankar also expressed support for former BJP MP Navneet Rana, attributing her recent loss to strategic setbacks by rival parties. He believes that her husband, Ravi Rana, now contesting from the nearby Badnera constituency, has strong voter support and will likely secure a seat in the Vidhan Sabha.

A group of women flower sellers in Amravati’s Amba Devi market told The New Indian that they are backing the BJP in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. Citing the Ladki Bahin Yojna welfare scheme and development initiatives by the BJP-led government, the women shared their reasons for wanting the “Kamal” (lotus) symbol to win.

“The scheme has helped us a lot,” one of the women said, explaining that government support and improvements in local infrastructure have made a difference in their lives. The women expressed hope that continued BJP leadership would bring further benefits to their community.

The constituency has seen a wave of shifting political allegiances, with prominent candidates switching parties and sparking fresh dynamics in the race.

One of the key figures in Amravati’s evolving landscape is Sulbha Sanjay Khodke, a former Congress MLA who won with over 82,000 votes in 2019 but now stands with the BJP. Her main rival is Sunil Deshmukh, her previous BJP opponent, who has returned to Congress, making for an unexpected and heated face-off. Adding further competition, independent candidate Jagdeesh Gupta has entered the fray, making this one of the most complex races in the region.
