Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday hailed Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation’s (ENPO) decision to withdraw its boycott call against Assembly Elections, saying it is an expression of trust in the Modi government.

The ENPO has been demanding separate statehood – Frontier Nagaland – consisting of six districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamatore and Noklak. It had given the poll boycott call to the press.“It is heartening that in an expression of trust in the Modi government, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organisation (ENPO) in Nagaland has withdrawn its call to boycott the assembly elections. The decision will help in keeping the ongoing process of peace and development unhindered,” Shah said in tweets.

Calling the development, “great news”, Shah said, “The withdrawal of ENPO’s call for a boycott demonstrates the confidence and support for the Modi government’s efforts towards peace and development in Nagaland. This positive step will pave the way for a smooth election process.”

ENPO held an Executive meeting on 4th February 2023 at Tourist Lodge Dimapur. “Following the request of the MHA to review August 26, 2022 resolution of ENPO and its constituent Tribal Bodies and frontal Organizations to abstain in any election process and the subsequent assurance given by the Hon’ble Union Home Minister to ENPO officials on 2nd February 2023 the ENPO in due consultation with its constituent tribal Bodies and Frontal Organizations hereby relaxed the 26th August 2022 resolution with immediate effect,” said a press release by the organisation.

The ENPO also requested all citizens to cooperate with the government in the conduct of the election and not create any law and order problems within the organisation’s jurisdiction.

The ENPO area has 20 seats in the 60-member Nagaland Assembly. The last date for filing nominations for the Nagaland Assembly elections is February 7 for the February 27 polls.
