GUWAHATI : Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the upgraded Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Assam’s Golaghat district on Saturday, marking a major step in strengthening law enforcement training in the Northeast. The academy, located in Dergaon, was launched during Shah’s three-day tour of Assam and Mizoram.

During the event, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh provided an overview of the facility’s advanced features, which include digital classrooms, high-tech weapon simulators, forensic research units, administrative blocks, a heritage museum, and a state-of-the-art parade ground. Accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Shah explored the newly developed infrastructure.

Infrastructure and Development Phases

Spanning 340 acres, the academy is being constructed in two phases with an estimated budget of ₹1,024 crore. The first phase, completed at a cost of ₹167.4 crore, includes a five-story academic block designed to merge theoretical education with hands-on tactical training. A key highlight is the immersive weapon simulator, allowing trainees to practice real-time scenarios in a controlled environment, minimizing risk and reducing operational expenses.

The second phase, valued at ₹425.48 crore, will focus on residential accommodations, including housing for 240 families, hostels for 312 officers, and lodging for 2,640 recruits. Officials emphasized that the facility will play a crucial role in equipping personnel with modern policing techniques to handle evolving security threats.

Strategic and Cultural Importance

Renamed in honor of Lachit Barphukan—a legendary 17th-century Ahom commander known for his resistance against Mughal invasions—the academy serves as a tribute to Assam’s rich historical legacy. A newly established museum within the campus further showcases the region’s valiant past.

Shah’s visit underscores the central government’s commitment to strengthening security infrastructure in the Northeast. The revamped academy is set to become a premier center for advanced police training, enhancing operational readiness and efficiency for law enforcement agencies across the region.
