SRINAGAR: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amit Kumar, an erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) cadre officer now serving under the AGMUT cadre, has been promoted to the rank of Inspector General (IG) in the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Before this, Kumar held the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) position within the same organization.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) sanctioned the NIA’s proposal for Kumar’s promotion. The official MHA order noted that the officer, a 2006-batch IPS cadre, would assume the IG rank from the day he formally takes charge of the position.
The NIA has been instructed to inform the MHA about the date of Kumar’s assumption of the new role, with his tenure set according to provisions outlined in the IPS Tenure Policy.

Kumar’s promotion is underscored by his remarkable service history, which includes a life-threatening injury sustained during a counterterrorism operation in February 2019.
At that time, as DIG of South Kashmir, Kumar was instrumental in the operation that neutralized the mastermind behind the Pulwama attack. Despite sustaining a serious gunshot wound to the abdomen, he displayed exceptional resilience.

After being airlifted from an army hospital in Srinagar in critical condition, he underwent five major surgeries at AIIMS, Delhi. After months of recovery, Kumar resumed duty in December 2019.
In recognition of his outstanding bravery and leadership during the operation, Kumar was honoured with the Shaurya Chakra by President Ram Nath Kovind in August 2020. The citation lauded his “unparalleled courage, exemplary leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty.”
Amit Kumar has held pivotal roles throughout his career, including SSP Pulwama, SSP Srinagar, SSP Security Kashmir, DIG South Kashmir, and DIG Armed Police. His experience and dedication make him a vital asset to the NIA and the nation.
