Amid barbs over bonds, ED arrests ex-Telangana CM’s daughter Kavitha

HYDERABAD/NEW DELHI: Dealing a major blow to the BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samiti) ahead of the elections, Enforcement Directorate on Friday arrested BRS leader K Kavitha, the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. The move came barely hours after SBI submitted data on donations received via electoral bonds to various political parties, with BRS standing at number four position having received Rs 1,214 crore.

Kavitha is a Member of the legislative council (MLC) in Telangana. She was questioned in the case in 2023 twice, but had skipped two summons this year.

The Supreme Court had adjourned the hearing till March 19 on BRS leader K Kavitha’s plea against ED summons in connection with the Delhi excise policy irregularities matter.

ED has alleged that one of the accused in the case, Vijay Nair, received kickbacks to the tune of at least ₹100 crore from the “South Group” (allegedly controlled by Sarath Reddy, Kavitha and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy) on behalf of leaders of the AAP.

“Wherever Modi goes ED and Income Tax either precedes or succeeds. That is what is happening in the state and they want to create a panic situation in the BRS. The ED and IT which are working at the behest of BJP are not bothered about the Congress leaders of Telangana who have illegally obtained so much wealth,” the BRS spokesperson Sravan Dasoju alleging that the arrest is politically motivated and is part of the BJP agenda.

Arguments ensued between ED officials and BRS leader KTR, who is also Kavitha’s brother, when the probe agency served an arrest memo on the BRS leader.

KTR alleged ED produced an “illegal arrest warrant” against Kavitha. Meanwhile, ED officials told KTR not to “obstruct” the team’s work.
