NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modiโ€™s remarks aimed at Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha have sparked a strong reaction from the Congress and its allies. The Opposition contends that the Prime Minister used these attacks because he lacked answers to pressing issues like the NEET controversy.

During his response to the Motion of Thanks to the Presidentโ€™s address, Prime Minister Modi sharply criticized the Congress, particularly targeting Rahul Gandhi, who had earlier criticized the BJP on Monday. Amid opposition slogans in the Lok Sabha, Modi addressed Gandhiโ€™s allegations that the government had misused investigative agencies against him.

โ€œThe Leader Of the Opposition Mr. Gandhi a โ€˜balak buddhiโ€™ (childish mindset) staged a drama to garner sympathy. The truth is he is out on bail in a corruption case involving thousands of crores and was convicted for defaming an OBC community, for which he had to apologize to the Supreme Court for misrepresenting facts,โ€ PM Modi stated.

โ€œThe Prime Minister remarked that this โ€˜balak buddhiโ€™ sometimes tries to hug someone in the House and even winks,โ€ referring to the 2018 incident when Gandhi crossed the treasury benches to embrace Prime Minister Modi.

PM Modi mocked Gandhi using a popular dialogue from the movie โ€œGangs of Wasseypur,โ€ suggesting the country was indicating that the Congress leader, who says โ€˜tumse nah ho payegaโ€™ (you wonโ€™t be able to do it), was not capable.

In response, the Congress asserted that in the recent election, 140 crore Indians had expressed their lack of confidence in the Narendra Modi government.

In a social media post on (X), Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Prime Minister for labeling the main Opposition party as a โ€œparasiteโ€ and accused him of applying the same term to protesting farmers.

โ€œIn your speech of 2 hours and 24 minutes, the way you mentioned โ€˜tumse na ho payega,โ€™ 140 crore Indians echoed the same sentiment towards your government in this election,โ€ he said. โ€œModi ji, you have disregarded the electoral mandate. Listen to the peopleโ€™s feelings and abandon dictatorship!โ€ Kharge emphasized.

Responding to the Prime Ministerโ€™s โ€˜parasiteโ€™ remark, Kharge pointed out that Modi had previously used the same term to refer to farmers during their year-long protest from 2020 to 2021.

โ€œYou have insulted the farmersโ€™ year-long struggle for their rights. Eventually, your authoritative government had to concede and repeal the three anti-farmer laws. Today, you have used the same word for the Congress party. This isnโ€™t an insult to us; itโ€™s a matter of pride to stand alongside farmers in nation-building,โ€ Kharge stated.

The Samajwadi Party, a Congress ally, also criticized the Prime Ministerโ€™s โ€˜balak buddhiโ€™ remark aimed at Rahul Gandhi. Kannauj MP and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav condemned these comments, suggesting they were meant to deflect attention from issues like NEET. He emphasized that those who use such terms themselves display childish behavior, especially when the public has elected someone. Akhilesh Yadav further remarked that inexperienced individuals in the government fail to grasp the nationโ€™s challenges.
