LUCKNOW: A day after Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that he will consult the people of Azamgarh on contesting assembly elections, he may contest the elections from his family pocket borough of Mainpuri’s Karhal seat.
Top Samajwadi Party sources says that Akhilesh Yadav might contest from Karhal in this assembly polls.
The development comes a day after Akhilesh Yadav said that he will consult with the people of Azamgarh to contest the assembly elections. He had also said that he will contest from any seat that the party decides.
Akhilesh Yadav is currently a sitting MP from Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The Samajwadi Party, which is eyeing a comeback in the politically vital state, has stitched alliance with several parties including Jayant Choudhary’s Rashtriya Lok Dal, Apna Dal, Shivpal Singh Yadav led Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party and several others.
The ruling BJP is eyeing a second consecutive term in the state in the 403 member assembly.
The Yadav clan in Samajwadi Party is facing a rift as party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav’s younger daughter-in-law and Akhilesh’s sister-in-law Aparna Bisht Yadav joined the BJP on Wednesday in Delhi.
The assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh are scheduled in seven phases from February 10 to March 7 and counting of votes will take place on March 10.
