KOLKATA: After taking the lead in bringing the opposition together for fielding a joint candidate in the recently concluded Presidential elections, the enthusiasm of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) appeared to have fizzled out for the Vice-Presidential election.

The Mamata Banerjee-led party had maintained a bizarre silence on the issue. It also skipped the all-opposition meeting at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar’s residence in Delhi.

When The New Indian contacted the party leaders it was told that the party will decide its stand on July 21.

Other than observing Shahid Divas on July 21, the AITC supremo has called a pivotal meeting with Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs where action regarding the upcoming Vice-President elections will be decided along with the party’s move on parliament session.

The meeting will be held at CM’s residence in Kalighat, South Kolkata.

AITC’s dreams to make its presence felt across the states, appeared to be missing from action as the monsoon session effectively began today.

When asked about the party’s sudden coldness, a TMC MP reasoned that the party’s active participation will begin from July 25 onward as they are now busy preparing for ‘Shahid Divas’.

Though Didi, as Mamata Banerjee is fondly called, is yet to take a call on Alva, her pricky relationship with ruling NDA pick Jagdeep Dhankar was well documented. As Governor of Bengal, Dhankar and Banerjee had numerous run-ins.

The elections for the next Vice-President of India will be held on August 6, 2022.
