Tataโ€™s low-cost carrier faces scrutiny as an investigation is launched after Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot was left behind on a Bengaluru-Hyderabad flight, sparking protocol concerns

NEW DELHI: AirAsia is facing an investigation after a flight from Bengaluru to Hyderabad took off without Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, who was waiting at the airport lounge and had already checked in his luggage.

The incident led to a complaint being lodged at the Kempegowda International Airport police station, citing a breach of protocol.

Governor Gehlot was scheduled to fly to Hyderabad on Thursday afternoon from Terminal 2 and then proceed to Raichur by road for a convocation event.

The Governorโ€™s Protocol Officer, M Venugopal, filed the complaint, seeking action against AIX Connect and the responsible airline officials.

The complaint stated that Governor Gehlot arrived at the VIP Lounge of Terminal 1 at 1.35 pm, where his luggage was already loaded onto the plane.

โ€œThe protocol officer, along with Airport Guest Relations Assistant Sanskriti, made arrangements for the Governorโ€™s boarding. Additionally, the ADC to the Governor was informed to reach Terminal 2,โ€ the complaint stated.

โ€œHowever, an AirAsia (AIX Connect) employee named Arif reportedly denied entry to the Governor, claiming a delay in arrival, even though the planeโ€™s door remained open,โ€ the complaint alleged.

โ€œThe Governorโ€™s luggage was then unloaded, leading to a ten-minute delay. Despite Governor Gehlot standing near the ladder with the plane door open, he was allegedly ignored and insulted by not being allowed inside the flight. He eventually returned to the VIP Lounge,โ€ the complaint further said.

In response to the incident, AirAsia expressed regret and assured a thorough investigation. The airline stated that appropriate action would be taken and that its senior leadership team is in communication with the Governorโ€™s Office to address the concerns.

โ€œWe sincerely regret the incident. An investigation is being conducted and appropriate action will be taken. The senior leadership team of the airline is in contact with the Governorโ€™s Office to address the concerns,โ€ AirAsia stated.

AirAsia emphasised its commitment to professionalism and adherence to protocol, highlighting the value it places on its relationship with the Governorโ€™s Office.

โ€œOur commitment to the highest standards of professionalism and adherence to protocol remains unwavering, and we deeply value our relationship with the Governorโ€™s Office.โ€ the airlines said.
