NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh visited the Handloom Expo at Janpath, which has been ongoing since August 3, 2024, and will continue until August 16, 2024.
Addressing the media, he spoke about Modi’s vision for increasing both the domestic market and foreign exports. He said, “We are planning to expand the handloom sector. More than 35 lakh families are associated with it. Handloom is not only limited to sarees and dhoti kurtas nowadays. We are providing fashion options for youngsters as well in the form of silk and cotton kurtis and kurtas.”

While talking about the response of the young generation to the handloom sector, he mentioned that various designs, including denim and silk, had been introduced. Now, handloom has become a fashion statement for the younger generation. Singh stated that he believes Indian handloom export and domestic markets will increase, as “India holds a 90% share in the overall handloom sector.”

As part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, Singh distributed national flags to the artisans and appealed to everyone to participate in the campaign. He also spoke with representatives from different states about the exports and turnover of their handloom products.

While discussing handloom, Singh also addressed the recent controversy surrounding the Hindenburg report. The report cast doubt on SEBI’s reluctance to take action against the Adani Group, suggesting that SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Buch and her husband, Dhaval Buch, might have a conflict of interest due to their connections with foreign funds related to Adani.

Following the report, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi tweeted a video message questioning why SEBI’s chairperson has not resigned yet. In response, Giriraj Singh said, “Rahul Gandhi creates confusion; he is the enemy of the country. When he (Rahul Gandhi) goes abroad, he does the same, and in our country as well, he does the same. He is a traitor.”
“VIRAASAT” is a fortnight-long exhibition dedicated to celebrating the 10th National Handloom Day. The National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd (NHDC) is organizing the handloom expo under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Another exhibition is also happening at Dilli Haat-INA.
