NEW DELHI:  In a decisive move, the All-India Residents and Junior Doctors’ Joint Action Forum (AIJAF) has issued a nationwide call for solidarity, demanding justice for Abhaya, a case involving a brutal crime that has sparked widespread outrage.

The forum has criticized the West Bengal government’s failure to deliver justice, despite ongoing investigations by the CBI under the Supreme Court’s supervision.

AIJAF condemned the West Bengal administration’s attempts to suppress dissent, particularly through punitive actions against junior doctors.

They also expressed concerns over misleading information regarding ongoing protests. In response, AIJAF has demanded live-streaming of discussions to ensure transparency.

Doctors in West Bengal have been on the frontline of these protests, standing in solidarity in the streets of Kolkata for over a month.

AIJAF emphasised that any action taken against them would be viewed as an attack not just on doctors but on the entire medical fraternity, further binding healthcare professionals in their commitment to protecting the public welfare.

Protest activities will include a one-hour pen-down strike in outpatient departments (OPDs) starting at noon, human chain demonstrations on campuses involving students and healthcare workers, and symbolic black badge-wearing.

The forum also plans to formally address the President and the Chief Justice of India, urging them to expedite justice. AIJAF warned that should the West Bengal government fail to act or continue with punitive actions against doctors, a larger nationwide movement involving all resident and junior doctors will ensue.

The AIJAF reiterated its determination to seek justice for Abhaya, emphasising that their fight for fundamental rights will persist until justice is served.
