As India flagged off the country’s first Semicon, a three-day mega event in India’s Bengaluru to bring together heads of several semiconductor companies, The New Indian’s Executive Editor Rohan Dua caught up with All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE) chairman Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe, who once served as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. Sahasrabudhe, who is part of policymaking on semiconductors, announced MoUs with a private company while also saying that this initiative will help roll out more than 85,000 students in a year to take care of the surging chip industry.

Rohan Dua: What brings you and AICTE to Semicon 2022 and what’s the contribution like today?

Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe: So, we have started two courses, one at the undergraduate level and one at the diploma level to support the semiconductor industry. These courses will be rolled out this year. The UG programme will be four years, the diploma is three years. We have had courses in electronics before but never one chip, VLSI design and fabrication. India needs new designs in chips for building applications.

Rohan Dua: So how much is the shortage of workforce for the semiconductor industry?

Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe: We aim to bring 50,000 students for the lower level, 30,000 for the middle level and 5,000 for the higher level for the semiconductor industry. We already have IIT and NITs but once we introduce courses to other premium technical institutes in India, it will take care of industry demand.

Rohan Dua: What’s the MoU signed today between AICTE and industry companies like?

Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe: This MoU is between AICTE and SEMI Tech Services India Pvt Ltd and India Semiconductor Mission and VLSI Society of India. For our courses, this MoU will ensure our students will get industry partners. This will help take care of things like our curriculum will be futuristic, second the training of our faculty members in designing those courses and so on.
