First, she was seen carrying a “Palestine” bag in Parliament, adorned with the watermelon symbol representing Palestinian solidarity. This symbolic gesture, following her meeting with a Palestinian diplomat, ignited a firestorm of criticism from the BJP, which accused her of “appeasement” and trying to gain attention after election defeats.
Priyanka responded defiantly, dismissing the criticism as “typical patriarchy” and asserting her autonomy in choosing what to wear. Her bold statement, “I will wear what I want,” highlighted her stance against societal pressures and expectations, particularly those imposed on women. However, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya didn’t hold back, ridiculing her, claiming her actions were a form of “crass communal virtue signalling” aimed at appeasing Muslim voters. He even compared her unfavourably to her brother, Rahul Gandhi, suggesting she was a bigger political liability.

The timing of the new bag was significant, as religious tensions have escalated in the region.
