Congress leader Priyanka Gandhiโ€™s act of carrying a โ€œPalestineโ€ bag in Parliament has stirred intense political debate.

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhiโ€™s recent actions have stirred intense political debate. First, she was seen carrying a โ€œPalestineโ€ bag in Parliament, adorned with the watermelon symbol representing Palestinian solidarity. This symbolic gesture, following her meeting with a Palestinian diplomat, ignited a firestorm of criticism from the BJP, which accused her of โ€œappeasementโ€ and trying to gain attention after election defeats.

Priyanka responded defiantly, dismissing the criticism as โ€œtypical patriarchyโ€ and asserting her autonomy in choosing what to wear. Her bold statement, โ€œI will wear what I want,โ€ highlighted her stance against societal pressures and expectations, particularly those imposed on women. However, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya didnโ€™t hold back, ridiculing her, claiming her actions were a form of โ€œcrass communal virtue signallingโ€ aimed at appeasing Muslim voters. He even compared her unfavourably to her brother, Rahul Gandhi, suggesting she was a bigger political liability.

This recent controversy was not the end of Priyankaโ€™s symbolic gestures. Shortly after, she was seen with another bag  this time featuring the slogan โ€œSave Hindus in Bangladesh.โ€ This new item seemed to shift the narrative, drawing attention to the ongoing challenges faced by Hindus in Bangladesh, a country where the minority community has seen increasing persecution. The timing of the new bag was significant, as religious tensions have escalated in the region.

Priyanka Gandhiโ€™s two distinct acts advocating for Palestinian solidarity and highlighting the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh show a complex political strategy. While the bags symbolize her engagement with both international and domestic issues, they have been divisive, attracting both praise and sharp criticism. Some see her actions as a genuine attempt to address global and local challenges, while others view them as opportunistic or polarizing. As Priyanka continues to navigate the political landscape, her symbolic statements serve as a powerful reminder of how deeply symbolism can shape political discourse in India.
