PM Modi wants to do right things for India, says Elon Musk
NEW YORK: Celebrated billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday said that he was a “fan of PM Modi” and his vision of India following a meeting in New York, United States which he dubbed as “very good”.
The owner of Tesla, Twitter and SpaceX, 51-year-old Musk said that he was planning to visit India next year, which will coincide with the general elections.
Speaking about the much-anticipated entry of Tesla cars in India, the tech icon said, “I am confident that Tesla will be in India and we will do so as soon as humanly possible. I would like to thank PM Modi for his support and hopefully, we will be able to announce something in the future. It is quite likely there will be a significant investment in India.”

Calling his conversation with PM Modi “excellent”, he said, “I am incredibly excited about the future of India. I think India has more promise than any large country in the world.”

Showing praises on PM Modi, he told reporters at Lotte New York Palace Hotel, “I can say he really wants to do the right thing for India. He wants to be open and supportive of new companies. I am a fan of Modi.”
Additionally, Musk mentioned the possibility of introducing Starlink, SpaceX’s broadband internet service, in India to bridge the digital divide in rural areas.
The discussions between the Twitter CTO and PM Modi covered a wide range of topics, including energy and spirituality.

Referring to former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s claims that the Modi government pressurised the social media company during farmers’ protest in 2021, Musk said, “There are different rules and regulations for different forms of governments, and we will do our best to provide the freest speech that is possible under the law. Twitter doesn’t have a choice to obey local government. If we don’t obey local government laws, we’ll get shut down. One cannot just apply America to earth.”
Last week, Dorsey, who sold Twitter to Musk for $44 billion last year, alleged that Indian authorities had threatened Twitter to shut it down if it does not ban certain accounts. The government has denied these allegations.
During the meeting, PM Modi acknowledged Musk’s contributions to making technology accessible and affordable and invited him to explore investment opportunities in India’s electric mobility and expanding commercial space sector.
PM Modi’s three-day visit to the United States began on Wednesday and see will meetings with various influential figures, including astrophysicist Neil De Grasse Tyson and investor Ray Dalio apart from bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden and other high-level engagements.
This visit highlights the prime minister’s commitment to strengthening ties with global leaders and exploring opportunities for India’s growth and development.
