NEW DELHI: Potato and tomato prices saw their inflation jump to 23.86% and 158.78% in June even as the red vegetable has now again become more affordable this month. The price instability comes at a time when the price for LPG cylinder has become costlier by another Rs 50, taking its price to Rs 1100/kg in most states.
According to the All-India Wholesale Price Index (WPI), the annual rate of inflation decreased to 15.18% for the month of June from 15.88% for the month of May. Food inflation rose to 12.4 % in June from 10.89 % in May.
The ministry of commerce and industry added, “The high rate of inflation is due to the rise in prices of mineral oils, food articles, crude petroleum & natural gas, basic metals, chemicals & chemical products, and food products are causing the high rate of inflation.”
WPI of beverages, tobacco and apparel had also shot up to 2.31%, 4.06% and 3.9%.
Prices of crude petroleum & natural gas and food articles increased in June as compared to May.
Prices of non-food Articles and minerals declined in June as compared to May.
The index of fuel and power increased by 0.65% in June as compared to May. Prices of mineral oils also increased in June.
The index for primary articles increased by 1.45% to 182.4 (provisional) in June as compared to it in May, which was 179.8.
The Manufactured Products index declined to -0.76% in June.
The Food Index consisting of ‘Food Articles’ from the Primary Articles group and ‘Food Product’ from the Manufactured Products group has increased from 176.1 in May to 178.4 in June.
