Afghanistan has announced its intention to open an embassy in the capitals, in a move that signals the Taliban’s desire to strengthen ties and cooperation with India. The embassy will be managed by distinguished Afghan diplomats who will foster friendly relations and serve the Afghan community in India. Afghanistan has also expressed its gratitude to the Indian people for their support and solidarity and has urged the Indian government to extend visa support to Afghan students, patients, and traders who seek refuge and opportunities in India. The Taliban-appointed Deputy Political Minister has emphasised Afghanistan’s dedication to strengthening ties with India and has reported that the consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad have reopened.
This is a welcome and positive development, as it reflects the historical and cultural bond that Afghanistan and India share, a bond that transcends politics and ideologies. Relations between the people of Afghanistan and India can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization, and have been enriched by the exchange of ideas, goods, and faiths over the centuries. India has been a consistent and generous partner in Afghanistan’s reconstruction and development since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001. India has provided over $3 billion in assistance to Afghanistan and has built over 200 schools, hospitals, roads, and dams in the country. India has also supported Afghanistan’s democratic aspirations and institutions and has trained and equipped its security forces.
India’s involvement in Afghanistan is rooted in authentic dedication to the well-being and stability of the Afghan populace, devoid of hidden agendas or self-serving interests. There is no inclination to meddle in Afghanistan’s internal matters or impose conditions on its governance. India upholds the sovereignty and unity of Afghanistan, endorsing an all-encompassing and peaceful political resolution reflective of the collective will of the Afghan people. India acknowledges Afghanistan’s intricate diversity without categorizing it along sectarian or ethnic lines, fostering amicable relations and collaboration across all segments of Afghan society. The focus is on nurturing dialogue and reconciliation for the betterment of Afghanistan.
