NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, featuring 11 names. Among them, six candidates are leaders who recently joined AAP from the BJP or Congress. Brahm Singh Tanwar, BB Tyagi, and Anil Jha left the BJP to join AAP, while Zubair Chaudhary, Veer Singh Dhingan, and Sumesh Shokeen switched from Congress.

In this list, AAP has replaced three sitting MLAs: Rituraj Jha (Kirari), Abdul Rehman (Seelampur), and Gulab Singh Yadav (Matiala). These three lost their tickets to candidates who had contested and lost in the 2020 elections under the BJP or Congress. Brahm Singh Tanwar, a former BJP leader, has been given a ticket from Chhatarpur. In Kirari, Anil Jha, who lost to Rituraj Jha in the last two elections, has replaced him. BB Tyagi, another former BJP leader, has been fielded from Laxmi Nagar.

Deepak Singla, who lost to BJP’s OP Sharma in Vishwas Nagar in 2020, has been given another chance. Similarly, Sarita Singh, who lost to BJP’s Jitender Mahajan in Rohtas Nagar in the previous election, has been retained. Ram Singh will represent the party from Badarpur, while Zubair Chaudhary, son of former Congress leader Mateen Ahmed, has been given a ticket from Seelampur. Veer Singh Dhingan, a Congress defector, will contest from Seemapuri. Gaurav Sharma and Manoj Tyagi will contest from Ghonda and Karawal Nagar, respectively. Sumesh Shokeen, who recently joined Congress, has replaced Gulab Singh Yadav in Matiala.

The current term of the Delhi Assembly ends on February 23, 2025, and the Election Commission will conduct polls before this date. In the 2020 elections, AAP secured a massive majority by winning 62 out of 70 seats, leaving the BJP with just eight, while Congress failed to open its account.

AAP has prioritized leaders who joined the party from BJP and Congress. Out of the 11 candidates, six have come from these parties, with three each from BJP and Congress. Three candidates from AAP’s 2020 lineup have been repeated. This strategy reflects AAP’s effort to bring in experienced leaders from other parties while reshaping its candidate list.
