Hours after Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted about the Rohingya Muslims being given homes in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) hit back, stating that they would not allow this to happen as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to gain political benefits with the issue.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry clarified that no such decision was taken to provide EWS flats to the Rohingya “illegal migrants” at Baakarwala in New Delhi.

AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said, “BJP is exposed today. With the tweet of its union minister (Puri), it is clear now that the BJP has rehabilitated these people in the country. And today, they are giving houses to them.”

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, “After pointing out by AAP on Rohingyas, the central government has started putting the onus on us. The truth is that the BJP wants to house the Rohingyas.”

On the question of the Home Ministry’s clarification, Bharadwaj said, “I have come here with the documentary proof of the meeting which was held on August 2. The chief secretary, officers from Delhi Police and FRRO were present at the meeting. Now their minister is tweeting and the Home Ministry is denying it. ”

“If the Home Ministry says no such decision was taken, then LG should suspend his officers who took this decision to allot the houses to the Rohingyas,” Bhardwaj said. He said after taking the decision, the file was sent to the LG for final approval without informing the Delhi government minister.

“Today the BJP is completely exposed. They are only trying to gain political benefits out of it. We want to tell them that we will not allow Rohingyas to get houses in Delhi. Puri ji can take them to the BJP-ruled states but not in Delhi,” he added.

The MHA, however, in its tweet said: “Govt of Delhi proposed to shift the Rohingyas to a new location. MHA has directed the GNCTD to ensure that the Rohingya illegal foreigners will continue at the present location as MHA has already taken up the matter of their deportation with the concerned country through MEA.”

“Illegal foreigners are to be kept in detention centres till their deportation as per law. The government of Delhi has not declared the present location as a detention centre. They have been directed to do the same immediately.”

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said: “It was only the Delhi government that gave a proposal to rehabilitate the Rohingyas, not our government. MHA has given the clarification. ”

Earlier in the day, Union minister Puri tweeted: “India has always welcomed those who have sought refuge in the country. In a landmark decision, all #Rohingya #Refugees will be shifted to EWS flats in the Bakkarwala area of Delhi. They will be provided basic amenities, UNHCR IDs & round-the-clock @DelhiPolice protection.”
