NEW DELHI: Amid an awkward encounter, UK PM Rishi Sunak and Dutch Premier Mark Rutte found themselves temporarily locked out of Number 10 on the steps of Downing Street. As Sunak welcomed the outgoing Dutch leader, the UK PM stepped outside to greet his counterpart. The two leaders posed for photographers before heading into a meeting to discuss various topics, including the Middle East, Ukraine, and illegal migration.

However, accessing Number 10 proved challenging for the leaders. Videos captured Rishi Sunak placing his hands on the door, leaving both men momentarily perplexed. The situation was resolved when the door was eventually opened from the inside.

This signifies the final diplomatic encounter between Rishi Sunak and Mark Rutte, as the four-time Dutch prime minister declared his departure from politics. Following a dispute over immigration earlier this year, Mark Rutte’s coalition government fell apart, ultimately leading to Geert Wilders securing triumph in the Dutch general election last month.

A spokesperson from Number 10 conveyed that during their discussions, the leaders delved into various geopolitical matters, particularly addressing the situation in the Middle East. They expressed disappointment over the breakdown of the ceasefire aimed at releasing hostages and emphasised the vital need for increased aid to reach Gaza, exploring alternative routes for its delivery. Additionally, both leaders concurred on the critical importance of averting regional escalation and stressed the significance of a unified effort to counter attempts to threaten maritime security.

The spokesperson further shared that Rishi Sunak, reflecting on recent conversations with President Zelensky, emphasised the necessity of unwavering support for Ukrainian allies, a commitment that should endure throughout the winter and beyond.
