SRINAGAR : Jammu and Kashmir Police has booked and arrested seven students at an agricultural university in Kashmir under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) after another student complained that he was allegedly threatened and pro-Pakistan slogans were raised following Australia’s victory against India in the cricket World Cup final earlier this month.
The complaint was filed by Bains* a student after a face-off between several students at the hostel of the Veterinary Sciences faculty of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) at Shuhama in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal on the night of November 19.
The students are Umer, Asif, Mohsin, Tauqeer, Khalid, Sameer (3rd year student), and Ubaid Gulzar (3rd year student), who raised pro-Pakistan slogans as India went on to lose the final to Australia in the World Cup 2023.

These men have been taken in police custody in Ganderbal, Central Kashmir.
Dean of Students Welfare SKUAST, Dr Mohammad Abubakar Ahmad Siddiqui, while talking to The New Indian said, “Seven students have been arrested, but I don’t have the latest information about the case. The students didn’t write any complaint to us,” he said.

An official at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences on condition of anonymity told The New Indian that on the night of November 19, there was a face-off between students at the undergraduate hostel after India lost the match.
“There are around 300 students residing at the hostels, out of which 30-40 are from states like Punjab, Rajasthan and others,” he said. “On the night of November 19, there was some face-off. The students from outside Kashmir alleged that the local students celebrated (after India’s loss) and harassed them.”
“No complaint was made to the warden or any other official of the institution. The student went directly to the police. Whether they presented any evidence about the incident or not, only the police will know,” he said.
The complainant in a police complaint, a copy of which lies with The New Indian said, “After the match was over, some Kashmiri students who are undergoing different courses in the university started abusing me and targeting me for being a supporter of our country and also threatened me to shut up otherwise I will be shot”. The complaint further said, “The students did not stop there but started shouting slogans (Jeeve Jeeve Pakistan) which created fear amongst the students from outside Jammu and Kashmir”. The complainant added, “I did not come out of my room for hours and now I am taking a courageous step and lodging this FIR.”
