NEW DELHI: India has set an ambitious goal of becoming the most developed nation in the world by 2047, the year of its centenary of independence, through higher education advancements and transformational reforms. This was the vision shared by Prof T G Sitharam, the chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), at a regional meet organised by the Education Ministry at Amity University on November 15.
Sitharam emphasised the importance of implementing the New Education Policy (NEP), 2020, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, to make India the “knowledge capital” of the world. He said that the NEP aims to provide quality and holistic education for all and foster innovation and creativity among the students and teachers.
Some of the key features of the NEP are to provide education in the mother tongue or the regional language, to reach the maximum number of people, and to preserve the linguistic and cultural diversity of the country. Sitharam said that efforts are being made to publish books in regional languages and to reform the examination systems, moving away from rote learning and memorisation to application and analysis.
Another significant aspect of the NEP is the integration of skill development into education, which will help the students acquire relevant and employable skills for the 21st century. Sitharam said that this will also contribute to the country’s development and self-reliance, as envisioned by the Prime Minister’s “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat” initiative.
Sitharam also said that India’s vision extends beyond self-reliance to becoming a global giver or “Vishwa Daata”, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic by providing vaccines to over 100 countries. He said that India has a responsibility and an opportunity to share its knowledge and wisdom with the world, and to play a leading role in addressing the global challenges and opportunities.
The regional meet, which was attended by around 800 to 1,000 participants, including innovators, startups, policymakers, and government agencies, was part of the Education Ministry’s initiative to create a platform for networking and innovation in the education sector.
The meeting also showcased some of the best practices and success stories of the NEP implementation in various states and institutions. The meeting was inaugurated by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who praised the efforts and achievements of the education stakeholders in the country.
