Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan, his wife Tanzeem Fatima, and their son Abdullah were convicted for seven years for their involvement in a fraudulent birth certificate case.
NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan, his wife Tanzeem Fatima, and their son Abdullah were convicted for seven years for their involvement in a fraudulent birth certificate case. The verdict was delivered today by the Rampur MP-MLA court.
The case revolved around Azam Khan’s younger son, Abdullah Azam, who contested the 2017 assembly elections from the Swar constituency in Rampur. Despite winning the election, Abdullah Azam’s candidacy was later challenged in court due to allegations that he was under the age of 25, the minimum age required for assembly candidates.
In addition to Abdullah Azam, the legal charges extended to Azam Khan, a senior SP leader, and his wife, Tanzeem Fatima. It was alleged that the family had manipulated Abdullah Azam’s birth certificates to enable his participation in the elections.
The court’s ruling established the guilt of all three defendants, resulting in a 7-year prison sentence for each of them. They were promptly taken into custody from the courtroom following the announcement of the verdict.

This case took a new twist in 2019 when BJP MLA Akash Saxena filed charges against Abdullah Azam, accusing him of possessing two birth certificates. Azam Khan and his wife, Tanzeem Fatima, were also implicated in the case.
The judgment marks a significant legal setback for Azam Khan, a prominent figure in Uttar Pradesh politics. The family members’ convictions and prison sentences underscore the seriousness with which the court treated the matter.
