CHANDIGARH: Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday announced a memorial in Punjab in remembrance of those who lost their lives during year-long farmers’ movement.
Channi said so far they (government) have not decided about the site, but the government would decide after discussing with the farmers’ union.
He was addressing media here in Punjab Bhawan. He said that the farmers’ movement has proved to be the biggest struggle in the country after independence.
“We have decided for a memorial in the memory of those who died during the year-long protest,” Channi said.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of withdrawing three agricultural laws, the chief minister said that due to agricultural laws, farmers, farms and laborers of the country have paid a big price for it.
Prime Minister Modi should have already understood that these laws against agriculture will not be accepted. But the PM did not listen to anyone in front of his insistence
He said that even the Supreme Court had stayed these three agricultural laws but even after this, the central government did not repeal the laws.
Channi said that when the Modi government sensed defeat in the next assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, they took this decision. He also said that the farmers will end their protest after proper process of repealing of the laws being followed in Parliament.

I would also like to say that apart from this, the Central Government must ensure Minimum Support Price Guarantee (MSP) Guarantee Act for the purchase of crops
The chief minister also attacked Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP’s former ally. He said that Akali Dal has also been with the government in implementing all the three agricultural laws.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu said that no one should take credit in the entire matter and the credit must be given to only Samyukta Kisan Morcha and different farmers organisations who continue to hold protest in intensive cold or blistering summer.
