NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party lambasted the Central government on Sunday as it expressed its deep dissatisfaction with the current state of the Indian railway system.

Delhi Chief minister and AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal criticised the central government’s handling of the railway system by sharing at least 27 pictures and videos of packed coaches tweeted by various users.

In a series of tweets, Kejriwal remarked, “The undereducated government has destroyed the whole railway system. How is a government that is incapable of running the railways, allowed to run the country? Even if you book tickets for AC coaches, finding a seat to sit or sleep in is nearly impossible.”

He further emphasised that the AC and sleeper coaches of trains have deteriorated to a level worse than general bogies, showcasing the government’s lack of understanding of the system.

CM Kejriwal criticised the government’s incompetence by stating, “These people do not know how to run the government because they do not understand the system.”

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh highlighted the abysmal state of the railways in a press conference. He criticised the BJP government for neglecting the sector and eroding the facilities and benefits available to citizens, particularly the elderly.

The AAP senior leader also raised concerns over the lack of seat availability, deteriorating passenger facilities, and mishandling of accidents, with subsequent cover-ups using CBI inquiries.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian railway system has been disastrously mismanaged. Previously, the railway budget was presented separately, accompanied by the planned launch of new trains,” Singh said.

“There were concessions in travel for senior citizens, which have now been shamefully abolished by the BJP government. While Gautam Adani and other capitalists enjoy benefits worth crores, basic facilities for the elderly are quietly removed, leaving them more vulnerable,” Singh alleged.

The Rajya Sabha member then highlighted the dire situation of railway facilities and safety.

“Despite purchasing tickets, passengers are left without seats, forced to travel like animals. Reservations are unavailable, trains are scarce, and frustrating delays increase. When accidents occur, the BJP government conveniently orchestrates a CBI inquiry to cover up their negligence,” Singh said.

Reminding people about the tragic Balasore three-train accident, Singh said, “Let’s not forget the tragic Balasore triple train accident was preceded by a chief engineer’s warning three months earlier, on February 9, 2023, of a potential catastrophe if the electronic interlocking system wasn’t fixed.”

“Regrettably, the Railway Minister and the Modi government ignored the report, resulting in the loss of nearly 300 lives. Their response by visiting the site for a photo-op, while complaining about the hot season, was nothing short of appalling,” Singh added.

Singh said that with every passing day, the number of accidents and train derailments increases, as the railway system falls into a state of disrepair.

“It seems that the destruction of the railways is being carried out with deliberate intent. Passenger facilities are either insufficient or deteriorating rapidly. It is a grave situation characterised by a series of unfortunate events, he added.
