NEW DELHI: After days of intense heat, there was some respite in the Delhi NCR as it experienced thunderstorms and moderate to light rainfall.
“A thunder cell is passing across Delhi-NCR, under its influence, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (40-60 kmph), lighting and light/moderate spell of rain are very likely to continue over most parts of Delhi-NCR during the next two hours,” the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
A storm cell is an air mass that contains up and down drafts in convective loops and that moves and reacts as a single entity, functioning as the smallest unit of a storm-producing system.
An organised grouping of thunder clouds will thus be considered a series of storm cells, with their updrafts and downdrafts being independent or interfering with each other. The cooled air drops lower in the atmosphere, warms, and rises again. This circuit of rising and falling air is called a convection cell.
If this happens in small amounts, a cloud will form. If this happens with large amounts of air and moisture, a thunderstorm can form.
An active Western disturbance is to affect Northwest India till May 26, with peak intensity on May 24th and 25th, IMD said.
The wet spell over northwest India following the western disturbance will be at its peak on May 24 and 25, but it will continue till the 26th.
The minimum temperature in Delhi observed was 22.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The maximum temperature settled at 35 degrees Celsius. In the morning, the humidity noted was 59 per cent.
