In a scathing attack on the central government for passing a late-night ordinance that overturns the Supreme Court’s judgement on power sharing, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders said this is a disrespect for the apex court and a cowardly decision that undermines the people’s mandate.
AAP leader and Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj stated that the Centre’s ordinance reeks of malice. “This is a case of fraud, cheating, and deceit that does not benefit the Central Government. The Centre has not only deceived the Delhi Government and the people of Delhi but also the Supreme Court’s constitution bench and the Constitution of India.”
Bhardwaj further explained that the people of Delhi elected CM Arvind Kejriwal to power three times with a landslide mandate. However, the Centre, driven by lust for power, disrespects such a significant mandate by manipulating the bureaucracy of Delhi. “The Centre has stripped the elected CM’s powers and placed them in the hands of the appointed LG. This ordinance not only empowers the LG to transfer postings against the government’s will but also obstructs the ongoing work of the government,” Bhardwaj added.
He asserted that such fraud and deceit have never taken place in the history of the country, and the citizens do not deserve to be undermined like this.
Another cabinet minister, Atishi, stated that the Centre’s ordinance is a clear-cut case of contempt of court. “The Modi Government has disregarded the unanimous decision of the Supreme Court’s constitution bench. The SC had directed that the elected government be given independent decision-making powers, in line with the principles of democracy. However, the Centre’s ordinance reflects the Modi Government’s graceless response as a loser. The Centre’s sole motive behind this ordinance is to snatch powers from the Kejriwal Government,” Atishi said.
Member of Parliament Raghav Chaddha wrote on Twitter: “To overturn a well-thought-out, unanimous Constitution Bench judgment with a reckless political ordinance, in complete violation of the Federalism, which is a basic structure of the Constitution, Constitutional Powers given to Elected Governments, and the Principle of Accountability of Civil Services to Ministers, is not just Contempt of Court but also Contempt of the Electorate.”
AAP MP Sanjay described the situation as an emergency. “When the Supreme Court’s decision came, Kejriwal had stated that the Prime Minister should act as a father. However, this is a father who is attempting to strangle the democracy and constitution of his children. PM Modi does not believe in the constitution; he only wants to run a dictatorship.”
