PATNA/NEW DELHI: A day after two more migrant workers from Bihar were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar raised his concern over the incident and said that the attacks on the migrants were “intentional”.

Kumar also spoke to the Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to share his apprehensions.

On Sunday, terrorists had gunned down two labourers from Bihar, while another person was injured. Following the attack, the police and security forces had cordoned off the area. According to the police sources, the terrorists barged into the lodging of the labourers and fired indiscriminately on them. The workers were living in a rented accommodation.

Speaking to the media in Patna, Nitish Kumar voiced his concern over the killings and said that the attacks seemed intentional. “Clearly some people are targeting those who have gone to J&K to work. I have spoken to the authorities concerned and we are hopeful that measures will be taken for the security of the migrants in the state.”

The Bihar government also announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to victims’ kin. Following Bihar government’s announcement for ex-gratia, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav slammed the government saying that the state government gave an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the family of a snake bite victim, but is paying only Rs 2 lakh to the labourers, who were forced to leave the state to earn their livelihood.

In a tweet in Hindi, Yadav said, “Bihar government gives Rs 4 lakh compensation for death due to snakebite but it gives Rs 2 lakh to Bihari labourers, who have left to earn livelihood due to the failure of the government and are killed by terrorists.”

Amazing! Destruction with injustice’ is the basic mantra of the Nitish-BJP government

Sunday’s attack was the third cowardly attack on civilians in less than 24 hours. Earlier in the day, the Rashtriya Janata Dal Rajya Sabha MP, Manoj Jha, questioned Nitish Kumar’s silence over the recent killings of the Bihari workers in Jammu and Kashmir.

In a video statement, Jha, who is also the party’s spokesperson said, “The happenings in Jammu and Kashmir over the last few days are very unfortunate and saddening. Many people have been shot dead brutally.”

Raising concern over the security of the natives of Bihar, Jha said that those being killed had only gone to Kashmir to earn their livelihood. “Why is the Bihar Chief Minister silent? Is he under so much pressure that he cannot give a message to the central government?” he questioned.

Slamming the central government, Jha said:

And what is the central government doing? Why is it allowing such incidents to take place in J&K? I appeal to the government to check this with folded hands. As the Leader of Opposition in Bihar pointed out, the government should bring back the distressed people who have been living in Kashmir under the shadow of fear till the situation returns to normalcy

He also demanded the migrant Bihari workers be given Rs 10,000 per month and the state government should make proper arrangements for them. “Without these measures a message will go that you (Nitish Kumar) have nothing to do with the lives of the people of the state. It will prove that you do not care about the people of Bihar,” the RJD leader added.

On Saturday, a street vendor from Bihar and a carpenter from Uttar Pradesh were gunned down by the terrorists. Several civilians have been targeted by the terrorists in Kashmir in the last 10 days, prompting the security forces to intensify its anti-terrorist operations.

On October 6, terrorists killed a popular pharmacy owner, M.L. Bindroo, a street vendor and a taxi driver. Two days later, terrorists shot dead a school principal, Supinder Kour and teacher, Deepak Sharma in Eidgah Area of Srinagar city.

On the other hand, the security forces have killed more than 10 terrorists in the last two weeks. The shocking incidents have evoked anger and outrage across the country.
