MP government is contemplating invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against those who are caught selling Chinese manja.
Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s government has demolished the houses of two men accused of selling glass-coated Chinese thread (manja), which has been blamed for at least one death and injuries to several others in Ujjain.
Chinese manja is a popular variety of threads used for flying kites due to its durability but often ends up injuring or killing human beings, animals and birds. It is banned in Ujjain district.
According to district government officials, the residences of Iqbal Khan and Hitesh Bhimwani were built illegally in Gandhinagar and Sri Ram Nagar areas, respectively.
They have been booked under section 188 (disobedience to government’s order) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested by the police.
According to the police, more than 340 kite spools of Chinese manja were recovered from the residence of Khan while 46 spools were found at the house of Bhimwani during searches by policemen.
Showing zero tolerance for the sale of Chinese manja, the Ujjain district administration razed their houses with bulldozers in the presence of senior officials and the police force.
The action comes days after two persons – a scrap dealer and a girl student – got injured by Chinese manja in the district.
On Thursday, a 30-year-old Moinuddin sustained injuries after his throat was cut by a Chinese manja near Hari Phatak bridge. A six-year-old girl was injured in her neck when she got entangled in the thread.
A 20-year-old woman, Neha Anjana, died after a Chinese kite string slit her throat when she was driving a scooter in Ujjain city in January last year.
Following Neha’s death, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan instructed all district administrations to identify and take strict action against people selling life-threatening Chinse manja. He had also instructed district authorities to conduct search operations to seize the kite string.
Acting on the instruction, the Ujjain district had imposed a ban on the purchase, sale, and storage of Chinese manja. Additionally, the police had issued mobile numbers of the police station in-charges for the public to report such sellers.
State home minister Narottam Mishra has said that the BJP government is contemplating invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against those who are caught selling the highly dangerous kite string.
