India’s only Hockey World Cup crown came in 1975, when goals from Sardar Surjit Singh Randhawa and skipper Ashok Kumar helped them beat arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 in the third edition.

With Odisha hosting the tournament for the second successive time, Odisha CM Patnaik hoped that India’s wait for the world crown finally gets over.

Patnaik made this announcement while inaugurating the World Cup Village at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium Complex in Rourkela. The state capital, Bhubaneshwar, and Rourkela will host the 15th edition of the tournament from January 13-29.

The World Cup Village has been developed in a record nine months. It has 225 rooms with all the amenities befitting the stature of the Hockey World Cup. The Village will house the teams and officials.

The World Cup Village along with the Hockey Practice Centre and the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, will offer a holistic environment for the national and international players for the marquee tournament.

Taj has been roped in by Hockey India to offer impeccable service and hospitality that reflects the culture of Odisha.

Odisha sports minister Tusharkanti Behera, president of Hockey India and former India star Dilip Tirkey, along with officials from Hockey India and the Odisha government, were present at the inauguration.

Interacting with the players, Chief Minister Patnaik wished them the very best and hoped they will emerge champions.
