In pursuit of Jose: Brazil, Portugal set sights on Mourinho

The transfer market is keeping the chill away in the world of football. While transfers are all about the players, the market is also abuzz with the men who will manage them.

While the recently concluded FIFA World Cup in Qatar cut many coaches’ tenures short, it has now been revealed that once-dominant Brazil, who only flattered to deceive, will seek the services of mercurial Jose Mourinho.

According to reports, Brazil, the pre-tournament favourite who were knocked out by Croatia in the quarterfinals, will be ready to compete with Portugal, who are also eyeing Mourinho to replace Fernando Santos.

According to la Repubblica, an intermediary from Brazil’s national setup will fly into Italy to meet up with the Roma head coach and begin negotiations face-to-face.

59-year-old Mourinho is currently employed by Serie A club Roma, having joined in 2021 on a three-year contract. There are reports that Mourinho is not entirely happy in the Italian capital, specifically regarding player attitudes and the club’s financial limitations.

Mourinho has vast experience as a coach, having helmed teams like Benfica, Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Roma.

A former midfielder, Mourinho entered the coaching fold as an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson at Sporting CP and Porto. Incidentally, he earned his coaching badges as an assistant coach at Barcelona under Robson and Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho stamped his mark as a manager during his two-year stint at Porto, where he helped them win the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League, ending the team’s European title drought since 1987.

‘The Special One’ as he once called himself, won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, and one FA Cup title during his highly successful first stint with Chelsea.

At Inter Milan, he won Serie A twice, including the treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League in 2010. He also became FIFA World Coach of the Year.

He won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and a Supercopa de España with Real Madrid. Mourinho rejoined Chelsea in 2013 and went on to win another Premier League title along with a League Cup.

UEFA Europa League, League Cup and FA Community Shield in his first season with Manchester United and led Tottenham to the League Cup final before leading Roma to the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League title.

He also became the first manager to reach and win the final of a major European competition with four different clubs.
