Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan is slated to visit Djibouti on a two-day visit on September 21-22.

Interestingly, China, which has a vast interest in Africa, is readying a military base in the country.

During his stay in the African nation, India and Djibouti will sign an agreement on the exemption of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and official/service passports.

An MoU between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS) and the Institute of Diplomatic Studies (IDS) of Djibouti will also be signed during the Union minister’s two-day visit.

On his maiden visit to the country, Muraleedharan will call on the Prime Minister of Djibouti, Abdoulkader Kamil Mohamed. He will also hold talks with Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and other dignitaries on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Muraleedharan will also interact with the Indian community in Djibouti, where a significant number of the Indian community is living. India and Djibouti share warm and friendly relations underpinned by historical and cultural linkages.

Djibouti extended extraordinary support for the evacuation of Indian nationals from war-torn Yemen in 2015 (Operation Rahat).

Muraleedharan’s maiden visit is expected to provide further momentum to the bilateral ties between the two countries, the Ministry of External Affairs stated. India and Djibouti’s bilateral trade stood at $755 million in 2021-22.

The former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, visited Djibouti in October 2017, following which India opened a diplomatic mission in Djibouti in 2019.
