DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurated the first drone factory of the state in Roorkee in Haridwar district on Friday.
The factory which is said to have a production capability of 150 drones per month, which include 50 drones for military usage, is set up by a private company under the centre’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
After inaugurating the factory, CM Dhami said, “Our nation has been a ‘Vishwa Guru’ since ancient times. And in modern times too we are leading in many areas under the able leadership of our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The novel initiative under ‘Make In India’ is a step towards making India aatmanirbhar in manufacturing of drones for civil as well as military usage.”
A state-of-art ‘Centre for Drone Research’ was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee last year. The objective of the initiative was to foster cutting-edge research and innovation in the drone segment.
The initiative has secured seed funding of Rs 100.38 lakhs from alumni of the 1994 batch on the occasion of their Silver Jubilee Reunion.
The centre is envisaged to evolve as a unique facility at the national level wherein state-of-the-art and frontier research would be conducted on several aspects of drone technology, including drone development, drone applications and anti-drone technology.
Drones are extensively used by the military in today’s world. Goldman had estimated that global military expenditure of approximately $70 billion on drones by 2020. They play an important role in the resolution of conflicts and are also quite helpful in the replacement of the human pilot to carry out time-sensitive missions and the execution of high-profile projects.
Drones can be used significantly in rural areas to improve the life of the people living there, especially when it concerns their needs to access healthcare.
These communities require a fast and vibrant transport system to handle health problems by transporting vaccines, medicines and blood packs from hospitals to health post locations.
Some of their other applications include videography of an accident site to preserve the clues which include photography and video clips taken during accidents/disasters, to monitor the search, rescue and relief operations.
It can also be used to see the progress of major projects such as construction sites, monitoring of animal populations to ensure wildlife protection, condition of tracks during breaches, floods and landslides, crowd management during major fairs and melas, mapping of various railway stations and yards performed for project planning purpose and much more.
