NEW DELHI: Congress on Saturday expelled its Haryana MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi from all party posts including a special invitee of the powerful Congress Working Committee (CWC) for cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Congress Rajya Sabha candidate Ajay Maken had to lose the polls by a thin margin after Bishnoi voted in favour of BJP-backed candidate Kartikeya Sharma.

Sharma, a media baron, contested the election for the upper house as an Independent candidate with the support by the ruling BJP and its ally Jananayak Janata Party (JJP).

“Congress president has expelled Bishnoi from all his present party portfolios including the post of Special Invitee of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) with immediate effect,” Congress general secretary (Organisations) KC Venugopal said in a statement.

Son of three-time chief minister Bhajan Lal, Bishnoi was apparently unhappy after being overlooked for the state president post in April this year.

It is speculated that Bishnoi chose the crucial Rajya Sabha elections to show his displeasure to the party by being instrumental in the defeat of Maken on Friday.

The result also put former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in a fix. Hooda was instrumental in appointing his close aide Udai Bhan as the state unit chief.
